Cannabidiol is a popular natural remedy that can be used to treat anything from pain and inflammation to Migraines and Anxiety. Better known as CBD, Cannabidiol is one of over one-hundred naturally occurring compounds, known as Cannabinoids, that are found in the Hemp, Indica and Sativa strains of Cannabis. Most people associate Cannabis with Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) for it’s psychoactive effects. CBD however, induces no psychoactive stimulation and is safe for consumption in children and pets alike. This quality makes CBD an appealing option for those who are looking for relief from pain and other symptoms without the mind-altering effects of Cannabis or pharmaceutical drugs.
Hemp plants, which are a strain of Cannabis that contain little to no THC, are the main source of CBD. Hemp plants and their terpenes (The aromatic properties secreted by the trichome glands of a plant that give it its distinctive scents and flavour profiles.) have higher heat resistance than its Indica and Sativa cousins, making heating methods a viable option for extracting an isolate.
There are a number of ways that CBD can be extracted and isolated from the plant. The first is through solvent extraction, which usually requires winterization (allowing properties to separate by introducing it to low temperatures) and distillation. Apeks Supercritical systems, which uses CO2 as a solvent in the extraction method, is an excellent example of this. CO2 solvent is considered to be a cleaner and purer extraction method as there is no unwanted residue left after the extraction process.
The second isolation method is through Hot Pressing, which doesn’t require the use of chemicals or solvents in the extraction process. Pressing is a more natural method than Apeks Supercritical systems and still offers a high quality rosin as the end result.
From here, CBD is mixed with a carrier oil, such as coconut oil, hemp seed oil and medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) oil.
As CBD continues gaining momentum in the health and wellness world, more and more scientific studies are confirming its ties to easing symptoms of ailments such as chronic pain and anxiety disorders as well as showing great promise for all neurological disorders. More recent studies have lead to discoveries that the human body has been deprived of cannabinoids, including CBD, that have caused an immune system depression that is at the forefront of present day medical issues.
CBD comes in a variety of forms; from topical creams and ointments to tinctures and edibles, making it a versatile and organic substitute to over the counter pain relievers.
